Causes of Flatulence

Flatulence and its Causes: In simple parlance, flatulence is nothing but gas. And it’s very normal to pass gas. Flatulence happens as a result of the process in the stomach of breaking down the food – the food elements are either absorbed by the body or eliminated. And this process of breakdown can cause gas.

Intestinal gas can happen when you swallow air while eating food, by gasping, sipping a fizzy drink through a straw and also due to bacterial action that happens in the intestines. Now that you know what causes flatulence, let’s look at ways to cure it. You will find ways to prevent and cure flatulence in your kitchen cupboard and in your house.

Home Remedies to Cure Flatulence:

• Beano is an effective gas-busting enzyme that can help the stomach digest difficult disaccharides, and thus, preventing gas. Available at most groceries, eat this after you consume gassy foods.

• Try munching on caraway crackers as caraway seeds are carminative i.e. have properties to get rid of gas.

• It is believed that under-cooked beans can cause flatulence. So the idea is to pressure-cook the beans well before cooking it to prevent the formation of gas, when the beans get into your stomach.

• Instead of gulping vitamin C tablets that can cause some gas, eat more citrus fruits for all your vitamin c requirements. You might also like to eat sweet peppers and potatoes as these vegetables are rich in vitamin C.

• Pumpkin has soothing properties and it can cut down a build up of gas. So you might want to boil, bake or steam some pumpkin for dinner or cook it into a soup.

• Yoghurt that has acidophilus is good for curing gas and aiding digestions.

• Cardamom seeds are good for digestion. So cook them with vegetables, add them to a rice dish, sprinkle some in a lentil soup, or chew them raw. You can steep your tea in cardamom and even add a few pods to an Indian dessert.

• Cloves can speed up digestion. So next time you cook rice, stew apples or make yourself a cup of tea, sprinkle some cloves for taste and health.

• Coriander can aid digestion, cure flatulence and even bring relief to cramps and hiccups. So crush the seeds or buy a pack of coriander powder and add it to your food. Curries in Asia are often cooked with liberal doses of coriander – leaves, seeds and powder.

• Try cooking your food with fresh or dried herbs. Lemon juice too can bring relief from gas.
