Bilirubin and Jaundice

What is Bilirubin?

Bilirubin is formed in the body when the red blood cells are naturally eliminated from the blood stream. The red blood cells contain the molecule hemoglobin which is responsible for supplying oxygen to the cells. This hemoglobin is broken down and bilirubin is formed. The bilirubin is then sent to the liver where it is processed and excreted through the bile. The bile passes through the intestine and the bilirubin is eliminated from the body through the stools. The stool gets its brown color from bilirubin. If there is any disruption in the process of natural destruction of the red blood cells or if the elimination of bilirubin is hampered in any way, jaundice can occur. This could take place when there is an abnormal breakdown of red blood cells or when the liver is unable to properly process and eliminate bilirubin or if the flow of bile in the intestine is blocked in some way.

Causes and Home Remedies For Jaundice

Jaundice refers to the yellowish discoloration that occurs in the skin and whites of the eyes. This staining is due to the increased levels of bilirubin in the body. The extent of the discoloration depends upon the content of bilirubin present in the body. Slighly elevated levels can cause a light yellow discoloration while high levels can cause a brownish discoloration. Inflammation of the liver or liver diseases such as hepatitis can result in jaundice. Inflammation occurring in the bile ducts can also lead to increased bilirubin levels, thereby resulting in jaundice. Obstruction of the bile ducts due to cancer and gallstones can also hamper the elimination of bilirubin and cause jaundice. Genetic defects and intake of certain drugs can also cause jaundice in the body.

A beneficial home remedy in the treatment of jaundice is radish leaves. The juice can be extracted by pounding the leaves. This juice can then be taken every day to boost appetite and encourage proper emptying of the bowels. Tomato juice is also a recommended remedy for jaundice.
