Benefits of Bilberry for Eyes
Historically, bilberry has been used for many things related to good health and happiness. However, that they are useful for eyes is a lesser known use for them. Traditionally, bilberries are known for their high fiber content which is excellent in treating diarrhea as well as dysentery. Unlike their first cousins, the blueberry, bilberries are also extremely high in tannin, which is probably what contributes to their intense and dark blue color all throughout the fruit, rather than just on the skin. It is this high tannin content which is also useful as an anti inflammatory agent. The leaves of the plant have also been used as an anti inflammatory agent with great success. They are crushed and the paste is applied to swelling and general aches and pains. It is also considered to be helpful in treating small time throat trouble. The use of bilberry as a tonic for the eyes came about some time in the middle of the last century. It was observed in controlled conditions that people who regularly ate bilberry jam seemed to see better in the dark. This is what led to the belief that bilberry may be good to improve eyesight. Since then, series of experiments have proven this theory out as well.
Bilberry for Eyesight
Bilberries contain extremely high quantities of certain anti oxidants which are helpful in easing and soothing eye problems. In particular, bilberry extracts are used to provide relief from staring constantly at a screen of any kind. Bilberries are also considered to be good for circulation in the eyes. This is perhaps also a reason why the extracts are actually applied as opposed to eating the fruit in too large a quantity. Bilberry is easily available in pill and capsule form. It must not be taken in excess of the recommended dosage, as this could be potentially harmful to people with certain health conditions. If the fruit is eaten fresh, however, it is completely safe even if consumed in extra large quantities. It can also be eaten safely by pregnant and nursing women, as it does not have any potentially problematic repercussions. Keep in mind that no other part of the plant may be used for a long time. If you have an inflammatory problem for which you are using bilberry and it persists for more than a week or so, you need to quickly consult with a doctor rather than continue with this usage.
