Sore throat, also commonly known as pharyngitis, is a very common throat problem that we all encounter at some point or the other. The common symptoms include pain and a feeling of scratchiness in the throat, accompanied with difficulty in swallowing. Sometimes, additionally, you may also experience cough, cold and fever along with a sore throat problem. In most cases, sore throat is caused by viruses and will go away on its own after a few days. To a lesser extent, sore throat may also be caused by a bacterial infection, in which case you may require a medical treatment with antibiotics. Some other causes of sore throat are allergy, dryness, muscle strain, and other irritants like smoke and pollution.

Here are some home remedies that you can try out for sore throat. Gargle with lukewarm saline water daily. Take half a teaspoon of common salt and mix it in a cup of lukewarm water. Gargling with this solution will help you soothe the irritation of your throat. This can be done as many times a day as you want and is considered a very effective treatment for sore throat.

Another good home remedy for a sore throat is to drink a mixture of ginger extract, honey, lemon juice and warm water. You can also boil a little cayenne pepper in water and sip the drink. Drinking an herbal tea made from basil, cinnamon, and black pepper will also provide much relief.

Do keep drinking a lot of fluids so that the body is not dehydrated. You can drink juices, tea, and soups, but avoid coffee and alcohol. In fact, any hot drink is considered good for treating sore throat. Therefore, brew a hot drink and sip on it as frequently as you can.

Steaming is another good remedy for sore throat. Take a bowl of hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, and then inhale the steam. This will clear out the congestion and soothe the strained throat muscles.

Sucking on lozenges and hard candies can also help soothe sore throat. It will keep your mouth moist with saliva and will help avoid dryness of the throat.

Besides these home remedies you should also take a few preventive steps. Avoid smoking and do not expose yourself to air pollutants. You should also rest your voice so that the throat can heal better and faster. Use a humidifier in the room so that the moist air helps reduce the irritation of your throat.
