Never hold it in: The best thing that you can do to prevent a urinary tract infection is to make sure you never hold your urine in your bladder. When you hold the urine in, bacteria can form and cause painful urinary tract infections. Make sure that you use the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge.
Practice good hygiene: Another way to prevent urinary tract infections (especially among women) is to make sure you wipe from front to back and not back to front. After you have a bowel movement, you can introduce bacteria in the bladder if you wipe the wrong way. It may also be a good idea to use flushable wet wipes, which can wash away most bacteria. After sexual activity, always clean the area well and avoid using tampons douches, which can push bacteria into the bladder area.
Stay hydrated: You can also prevent urinary tract infections by staying hydrated. Drinking plenty of water and fresh fruit juices, especially cranberry juice will help flush out your system. If you dislike cranberry juice, then try cranberry supplements.
Avoid bubble baths and change out of wet clothing: Soaking in a bubble bath feels nice, but it can certainly cause urinary tract infections. It is a good idea to limit bubble baths and if you do want to soak in a tub, avoid high fragrance products and oils. In addition, if your clothes get wet or you swim on a regular basis, it is a good idea to change out of the wet clothes immediately. This can help prevent a UTI.
