Autism Disorder Remedy

Autism is a developmental disorder of the brain that begins at birth or surfaces within the first two and half years. This condition is characterized by repetitive and restricted behavior, impaired communication as well as impaired social interaction. What gives rise to this condition is unknown. However, researchers state that anything that can cause damage (structural or functional) to the central nervous system can also bring about the condition of autism. Since the exact cause of this condition is unknown, no treatment has been developed to cure it. The effective remedy for autism is a well constructed training program. An autistic child can make substantial progress with the help of consistent and appropriate intervention.

Teaching children with autism can be quite a challenging task as there is no established method that works in the same manner for every child.

Here are a few tips that you can implement to teach a child with autism condition. Do not rely too much on written or verbal instructions because an individual with autism tends to be visually oriented. Use picture cards with their corresponding words, as the child will respond faster to pictures rather than words. Set a routine that the teacher and student can follow every day. Children with this condition generally feel safe in a routine, and will get aggressive if a set routine is disturbed. Do not stress too much on handwriting skills. Certain motor skills could be compromised due to this condition. Let the child type the answers on a keyboard instead. Make sure that you place the keyboard close to the monitor as the child may face a difficulty connecting the two objects. Do not use loud sounds while teaching, such as buzzers and bells. A child may respond negatively to such sounds.

Autistic children generally tend to fixate on a particular object they enjoy, like cars. Try and use this fixation in a positive manner by incorporating it in their lessons. You can cite stories on cars; use it in a mathematical problem and so on. This will stimulate the child to learn. These children cannot generalize normally, so if you are teaching the child to cross the street, you may have to do this in several different locations instead of just one, so that they understand the general concept of road crossing. Please bear in mind, that these are just tips. It is essential that you work with a professional that has been trained to teach autistic children.
