Nearly two decades ago in the early 1980s doctors fused a women’s egg and a man’s sperms is a glass dish in an experiment called in vitro fertilization and produced the first test tube baby. Assisted reproductive system not only refers to IVR but also too several other methods used to solve the fertility problem of a couple. These procedures are also pared with fertility drugs, to increase the success rate. With this entire effort one out of every three ART cycle result in a baby.
Although being so effective ART is a very expensive and invasive procedure. There are no such long term effects as such on the children born by this process, doctors recommends this is the last resort for having a baby.
Here is a run down of the technique;
In vitro fertilization (IVF)Â
This process was used in United States of America for the first time in the early 1980s. In this process several eggs are taken from woman’s ovaries and fertilized in a laboratory dish using sperms from her partner or donor. In case female eggs are not fit donor eggs are taken. When these eggs fertilize two or more fertilized eggs are planted in the woman’s uterus. There they implant themselves and grow naturally.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
This process is mainly used when the number, quantity or movement is not adequate for natural fertilization. In this process a healthy matured eggs are taken from women, and active sperm are isolated, after this one sperm is injected in each egg. After a few days when these eggs are fertilized are transferred to the women’s uterus. If the eggs fertilizes one or more eggs are implanted in uterus and courses pregnancy.
Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)
In this eggs are combined with sperms in a dish. Then they are transferred surgically in to the fallopian tubs with a laparoscope or tube. In this process fertilization takes place inside the body only. This process is mainly use for females who are above 40.
Zygote nteafallopian transfer
In this process some eggs are taken form ovaries or from a donor. The eggs are than fertilizes in a laboratory dish where they develop till zygotes. In the early stage when the egg has divided into two or four cells, they are transferred in to fallopian tube. The rest of the fertilization takes place in the body itself. This is also a laparoscopy process.
The other processes which involve under ART are Peritoneal Oocyte and sperm transfer (PROST) and Tubal Embryo transfer.
