Alpha Lipoic Acid for Good Health:

Alpha lipoic acid is essentially a fatty acid that is found contained within every cell of the human body. It plays an important role in the production of energy required by the body to carry out everyday physical activities. Alpha lipoic acid also acts as an antioxidant and neutralizes the harmful free radicals within the body. Unlike most common antioxidants such as vitamin E and C, it is able to function in water as well as fat. Moreover, it is also able to recycle other antioxidants such as vitamin C after they have been used up. Alpha lipoic acid also increase the formation of glutathione, which is a very potent chemical used by the body to eliminate harmful substances. A number of commonly consumed foods such as broccoli, peas, brewer’s yeast and even Brussel’s sprouts are all sources of alpha lipoic acids although the body is able to produce some of the substance on its own as well. One of the main purposes of alpha lipoic acids lies in the fact that it can cross the blood brain barrier and is therefore a major contributor in protecting the brain and nerve tissues from free radical damage. Due to their antioxidant ability, apha lipoic acid is also known to be a significant contributor to the aging process and chronic illness. Because of its potency, alpha lipoic acid is commonly used in the treatment of a number of conditions including cataracts, diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

As with any potent form of medication, alpha lipoic acid must only be taken as medication under the prescription of your physician as it does have a few side effects that have varying levels of intensity. Some of the less intense but common side effects include headache, the development of skin rash or even tingling or muscle cramping. The more serious side effect of the condition is one that is considered to be rather rare and is known as insulin autoimmune syndrome. This condition triggers a case of hypoglycemia and the antibodies will be directed at the body’s own insulin without any previous insulin therapy. Due to the overall effects of the substance, it is highly recommended that, when taking supplements, the daily dosage does not exceed 50 milligrams at the most.
