Relief from Night Sweats

Definition: Night sweats usually go hand in hand with hot flashes. When you experience a hot flash along with suddenly feel very hot, your skin may become red and flushed and you may perspire profusely. A hot flash may last from just a few seconds to 4 or 5 minutes. In some rare cases, it may go on for about 15 minutes and sometimes even for about an hour. A night sweat is a hot flash which occurs at night, especially when you are sleeping. In some cases it is also known to cause the person some amount of terror and anxiety.

Hot flashes are usually caused by hormonal changes in menopausal women, and are linked to lower levels of estrogens. Not all post menopausal women however, suffer from hot flashes and night sweats, and neither is the intensity the same for all. Men may also suffer from night sweats.

Hot flashes and night sweats could also result from various stimulants like caffeine (in chocolate, coffee, cola and black tea), spicy foods (pepper and ginger), acidic foods (pickles, tomatoes), hot or alcoholic drinks, tobacco and saturated fats. Stress, anger, extreme or forceful exercise as also hot weather could also trigger off a hot flash or night sweat.

How to get relief: While many women resort to hormone treatment to boost their levels of estrogen and get relief from night sweats, you may try other methods too.

Herbal treatment is an effective way to get relief from night sweats. Sage is supposed to be particularly good. You can take steep sage leaves in hot water and make sage tea, or have it in the form of powder or pills.

Herbs such as elder, violet and chickweed are cooling and help to lower incidences of night sweats. Plants that are rich in phytosterols such as black cohosh, dong quai and dandelion also help to give relief from night sweats. Licorice roots are also helpful.

Relief from Dry Mouth

  • Try stimulating your salivary glands by licking a lemon.
