High blood pressure is medically known as hypertension. This particular heart ailment if left untreated can cause seizures, heart attacks, kidney failures, strokes, blindness and in severe cases it could even lead to death. Hypertension or blood pressure is easy to control as compared to most potentially fatal conditions.

It is important to understand the key reasons that cause high blood pressure and the underlying causes to help treat this lethal disorder effectively.

High blood pressure simply implies that your heart is pumping harder than the required amount. The higher the pressure the greater is the strain on the heart and other vital organs of your body.

High blood pressure can also contribute to roughening of the artery walls and accumulation of cholesterol. As cholesterol accumulates on the walls of the arteries it reduces natural blood flow in the arterial walls causing clotting and consequently choking the performance of the heart. This situation leads to seizures, strokes or heart attacks.

Some herbal remedies can help mild to moderate cases. Try an infusion made from crushed violet flowers. Pour boiling water over the crushed flowers, cover the container and let the mixture steep for fifteen minutes. Strain the infusion such that you separate the solution from the flowers. Drink a cup or two every day to relieve chest pains. Voilet tea is also known to strengthen the heart. You can also try another herbal remedy comprising garlic, milk and water. Take half a cup of milk and water each with about five to six cloves of garlic. Cook this until half of the liquid remains. Strain and drink this decoction when cool. New research also indicates benefits with the intake of tomato extracts to reduce moderate blood pressure.

Some basic steps to help tackle the onset of high blood pressure include reducing intake of sodium or salts.  It is equally important to reduce refined and fatty foods, follow a healthy eating pattern and exercise moderately as part of your every day routine. Go for regular tests every year or every six months if you have a family history of high blood pressure. Practice de-stressing activities or learn to manage your stress through meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques. Switch to whole grain foods, cereals, pulses and nuts as compared to refined and processed foods. Reduce your intake of high calorie foods and stay away from fried foods. Increase your intake of foods high in calcium, magnesium and potassium.
