What is best for Hemorrhoids?
(15 Oct 2007)

Piles or hemorrhoids occur at end of the digestive tract, in the anus and rectal canal. The tissues in this region become swollen and the blood vessels contained within them appear as reddish enlarged bumps. This condition is similar to the occurrence of varicose veins in the legs.

The veins in the anal canal become dilated and swell, causing pain, inflammation and itching. Piles can occur internally, in which case they are not visible as the inflammation takes place on the upper portion of anal canal. However, it is possible that sometimes internal piles may extend out of the anus. In these cases, they become visible. They can be pushed back in certain cases. But at other times, due to the swelling, they cannot be pushed back in. If they continue to protrude out, the swelling and pain increases. Piles can also be external as they occur on the lower end of the anal canal. The occurrence of hemorrhoids can be attributed to various factors such as constipation, age, irregular bowel movements, diarrhea and pregnancy. Bleeding is a common symptom of piles and it is common for bright red blood to be visible in the stools.

Fiber must be consumed in the diet in order to prevent the development of hemorrhoids. Fresh fruits and vegetables are high in fiber content and as such must be included in the daily diet. The abundant intake of water is also imperative on a daily basis. Salt intake must be restricted as salt tends to aggravate the condition of hemorrhoids. Bowel movements become difficult when piles occur. Therefore one can apply creams to lubricate the anus. Such creams are readily available over the counter. Petroleum jelly will also work well in these cases. A fiber rich product that is very effective in treating constipation is psyllium seeds. These can be added to water or juice and taken a couple of times a day. This will soften the stools and allow for easy passage, thereby alleviating the pain caused by piles.

There are other easy home remedies that help in relieving the condition of hemorrhoids. A mixture of mint juice, ginger juice and lime juice can be mixed with some honey and consumed in the mornings. This will help to decrease the inflammation and quicken the healing process. Bitter gourd juice is known to be very effective in treating piles. It can be added to buttermilk and taken daily in the morning. Another excellent remedy for hemorrhoids is to take grated white radish and mix it with a spoonful of honey. This mixture can be eaten in the morning and at night to provide fiber to the body and help in the healing of hemorrhoids.
