What is hay fever?

Hay fever, also referred to as seasonal allergic rhinitis, occurs due to allergies caused by constant inhalation of certain allergens. These allergens comprise pollens, animal dander, or mold spores. Hay fever is characterized by mild fever, irritation in the nose and throat, constant sneezing, and congestion in the respiratory systems.

As the name suggests, in earlier times there was a conception that this fever occurs while making hay after the crops were harvested. The harvesting season was thus known as hay fever season. It has been found that hay fever usually occurs from allergies caused by pollens present in the air during spring season. This is therefore said to be the hay fever season.

Garden flower pollens usually do not cause hay fever allergies as their waxy large sized pollens are taken away by the insects. It is the light pollens of tree flowers that are dispersed in air due to wind that are responsible for causing allergies and hay fever. If you are allergic to pollens or prone to hay fever, you should take certain precaution when the hay fever season or spring begins. Some precautions include wearing a face mask while going out and taking anti-allergic pills. For more advice on the same, do consult your health care provider.
