The neck is the upper most part of the spine that supports the entire weight of the head. The neck also provides mobility as you swing your neck from one side to another. The neck is relatively more vulnerable to injury as compared to the rest of the spine giving rise to problems such as neck pain and stiffness of the neck. Neck pain, inflammation, injury or strain can cause severe pain and consequently restrict movement.

Neck pain is a common ailment resulting from improper sleeping position, incorrect sitting and standing postures or any other strain to the neck. Injury to the spinal cord may also cause a severe neck pain. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that affects muscles and tendons often causing extreme discomfort and pain. Muscle spasms can also spell trouble for the neck. In rare cases tumors or infections can also cause neck pain. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and cervical degenerative diseases are known to cause neck pain among older people. It is important to diagnose the causes that lead to neck pain to choose an optimum method of treatment. It is advisable to meet a medical practitioner incase the neck pain is unbearable, persistent, is accompanied by headache, numbness, weakness or tends to radiate down the arms or legs. These signs indicate you need professional help and guidance to help resolve the pain.

Treat the neck with massage therapy to soothe the muscles and tendons that are under strain. Also, try and sleep on your back and preferably on a firm bed. Take a brisk walk especially after long sessions of being seated. Use heating pads to relieve swelling or any form of inflammation on the neck. Neck collars help rest the neck but should be used for a limited time span. Yoga asanas can also help relieve strain on the neck by stretching and relaxing the strain on the neck muscles. Try gentle exercises that help mobilize the stiffened areas. Ice packs applied over painful areas can also reduce chances of inflammation, swelling and pain.

It is important to prevent neck pain after you have treated it. Detect and avoid actions that cause or aggravate neck pain. It could even be something as simple as an uncomfortable pillow. Do not bend over your work table and make sure that your posture is always correct. Do not lift heavy objects as theses will place an unnecessary strain on your spine and neck.

Never sleep on a chair or in a sitting or slouched position as this will almost definitely strain your neck muscles. Lie down in the most comfortable position to avoid aggravating the neck region. Use a comfortable pillow or preferably sleep without one until your neck pain reduces. Small rolled towels, feather pillows or cervical pillows are other available alternatives for those who must sleep with a pillow.
