Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a problem that affects as many as about 2% of the world’s entire population and can be extremely embarrassing at a social level. One of the problems with the condition is that a lot of people do not know that they sweat abnormally or excessively unless it has been pointed out to them by another individual – which can be even more embarrassing. Sweating is an important function of the body where fluids consisting of water and small amounts of urea, sodium chloride, lactate and minerals are created and eliminated from the body.
The sweat glands are primarily responsible for sweating and scientists estimate there to be about 5 million sweat glands in the human body. Apart from the elimination of toxins and other waste products, sweating also help cool down the body when it is overworked or when there is a change in the environmental temperature. The condition can affect a person’s quality of life on many different levels including causing a significant dip in ones self esteem as well as altering his or her social relationships. No primary cause has yet been identified for the development of excessive sweating, but studies have shown that the condition seems to stem from heredity where the condition has been passed down from one generation to another in the same bloodline. Under normal conditions, the hypothalamus – which is the part of the brain that regulates sweating, sends sensory signals to the sweat nerves that control the emission of sweat from the body.
Treating overactive sweat glands incorporates the use of a wide variety of adjustments to your lifestyle. An unbalanced or unhealthy diet could be a major factor in excessive sweating and making a few adjustments might help significantly. Foods like caffeine and alcohol are known to cause heavy sweating and should be avoided as much as possible. Spicy foods also tend to result in a heavy smell being incorporated in your sweat and avoidance would be advisable. The kind of clothing that you wear may also impact the amount that the condition affects you. Tight fitting clothes are known to trap sweat and also make sweat stains very prominent. Wearing loose clothing will allow your skin to breathe more easily while also enabling the sweat to evaporate much faster, thereby lowering the effects of excessive sweating. If your condition is aggravated by stress, you should make it a point to allow your body to relax at various intervals during the course of the day.
