cure for a bladder infection
( 8 Oct 2007)

Bladder infections or urinary tract infections are the second most commonly faced ailment and is known to be the core reason for about 8.3 million doctor visits in the United States of America every year. For reasons that are yet unknown, women are more susceptible than men to the development of urinary tract infections, and statistics show that one in every five women will experience the onset of this condition at least once during the course of her lifetime.

On the other hand only about 12% of all males are affected by a urinary tract infection, but they tend to be rather more serious when they occur. Urinary tract infections can affect any part of the urinary system from the kidneys to the urethra and even the bladder. Most often, the higher up the urinary system the infection is, the more serious it is likely to be. The infection starts to develop when bacteria gets into the urine and starts to grow. Most often, the infection will start at the opening of the urethra where the urine is expelled from the body and starts to move upwards into the urinary tract. The infection causing bacteria is called E. Coli and also normally lives in the colon and around the anus. As a result, one of the most prominent causes of urinary tract infections is sexual intercourse, or to be more specific – anal intercourse, as this allows the bacteria located in and around the anus to travel to the opening of the urethra. Some of the more prominent symptoms that the condition causes include a frequency in urination  - in spite of there being a noticeable decrease in the amount of urine that is actually expelled from the body, a painful or burning sensation during urination as well as the urine being characterized by a considerably vile smell and appearing cloudy.

To treat the condition, you should try mixing about ½ a teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of water and drinking it frequently through out the course of the day. This can be extremely helpful as the presence of baking soda raises the acid-base balance of the acidic urine within your system. Cranberry juice is also a very highly recommended beverage to help fight a urinary tract infection. Cranberry juice directly fights and prevents the growth of bacterial organisms in the urinary tract and should be consumed either undiluted or mixed with some apple juice for added taste.
