Alternative remedy for diarrhea

Colostomy is a surgery performed in cases of inflammatory bowel disease. A small incision is made to create an artificial opening. Wastes are eliminated through the stoma or opening.

Foods, such as apple juice, prune juice, seasoned foods and grape juice are foods that cause diarrhea. Bread, banana, cheese, apple sauce, pasta, peanut butter and starchy foods help in thickening the stools. Drinking with straws, eating fast, inactivity and smoking cigarettes are points to be avoided, as flatulence is seen to occur.

Antibiotic therapy, viruses, medications and food intolerance are some of the causes of diarrhoea after colostomy. Fluids in the diet are increased, as diarrhoea causes dehydration. Foods such as green pepper, cucumber, olives, nuts, corn, celery, cabbage, pineapple, peas, lettuce and mushrooms are avoided, as they block the stoma, due to incomplete digestion. Maintenance of regular meal timing is important. Have 4-6 small meals. Have the bigger meal in the afternoon, rather than at night. Avoid fresh fruits, as result in diarrhoea. Certain medications help in hardening of stools. Foods with fibre and bran are avoided, during diarrhoea. Refer to your physician, for further guidance.
