Acne is usually an indicator of another underlying cause. For Natural Therapists, it could indicate hormonal imbalance, poor digestion, bowel and liver problems and even vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The first line of treatment in any skin complaint is to improve digestion and stimulate liver function and this can be done through diet and also with supplements.
From a dietary angle, make sure you are drinking eight large glasses of water a day and remove foods that are low in fibre such as white flour, white rice; most fast foods should be avoided as they are high in saturated fats as are any deep fried foods and junk foods like chocolate. An way to decide if a food is okay to eat is to avoid ‘white foods’ and aim for lean meats like chicken and fish and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. If you don’t think you are getting enough fiber, adding psyllium husks can help make up this shortfall.
There are some great herbal supplements that address acne by improving digestion and look to those that have the herbs,a supplement containing a combination of St Mary’s Thistle, Oregon Grape, Golden Seal, Yellowdock and Dandelion can be found online or at your health food store. You can also take these herbs as a liquid: St Mary’s Thistle 20ml Oregon Grape 20ml Golden Seal 20ml Yellow Dock 20ml Dandelion Root 20ml Dose: 5ml three times daily. These are known as digestive tonics as they stimulate the liver, which is our primary organ for removing waste products from the blood by increasing bile flow and improving bowel function. Some of these preparations will also include Vitamin C and E and will almost certainly contain Zinc.
Topically, antiseptic herbs that also sooth the skin can be applied as a lotion, Calendula, Sage, Golden Seal in combination with a soothing herb, like Marshmallow are great applied to clean skin to reduce inflammation and keep bacteria at bay. With time, you will notice that your skin will not only improve but your energy levels and sense of wellbeing will get better as well. Getting assistance from your health care practitioner is advised as each case of acne may vary.
