Home remedies for heartburn
Heartburn is the feeling of burning sensation in the chest. It is a common symptom of gastro oesophageal reflux (GERD). Coughing, regurgitation of the intestinal contents, sour taste, heart burn and chest pain are the common symptoms of GERD. Oesophageal bleeding, ulcers and strictures are the results of severe and untreated GERD. Avoid sleeping, immediately after meals. Eat three hours before meals. Foods that trigger heartburn, such as carbonated beverages, tomatoes, citrus fruits, peppermint, chocolates, garlic, vinegar, coffee, citrus juice, black pepper and garlic are avoided. Cigarette smoking is not recommended, as nicotine in cigarettes weakens the oesophageal sphincter, which in turn prevents regurgitation into oesophagus. Deglyycyrrhizinated licorice is a common herbal remedy for heartburn. Soothing the oesophagus is also accomplished by aloe vera juice. Inner bark of slippery elm is beneficial in reducing irritation. Mucilage in the herb marshmallow is also an effective remedy against heartburn. Placing a hot pack on the chest is helpful. A hard candy is sucked upon to bring immediate relief.
