Remedies for insomnia

Please suggest some treatment for insomnia.

Insomnia very simply put is a sleep disorder. It is the difficulty that one faces in either initiating sleep or maintaining sleep and at times perhaps a combination of the two. This condition affects your quantity and quality of sleep.


Insomnia can be brought about by due a large number of reasons such as; stress, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, withdrawal from drugs, alcohol or medication, jet lag, a change in your shit timings at work and so on and so forth. The reasons are numerous. This condition can affect your daily routine as it can lead to a feeling of fatigue and tiredness. There are a variety of symptoms that can be associated with this condition such as, lack of focus and concentration, irritability, memory problems, tiredness and motor co-ordination may be affected. Insomnia can be divided into three categories depending on the timeframe of the problem; a)transient insomnia-this last for less than a week, b) short term insomnia-symptoms last between 1-3 weeks and c) chronic insomnia- last for more than 3 weeks.

Following a few simple home remedies can help cure this condition. Lettuce has been proved to be useful in the treatment of insomnia as it contains a substance known as lectucarium, which helps in inducing sleep. The effects of drinking the juice made from this vegetable, has been compared to the effects of opium but minus the accompanied excitement. Lettuce seeds, if had in the form of a decoction, can also help in battling insomnia. A tablespoon of these seeds should be added to 500 ml of water and then boiled, till the quantity of water is reduced to 1/3rd.  Milk can also be used to treat this disorder. Add a tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm milk and have this before going to bed. The milk acts as a tranquilizer and helps in getting sleep.

Massaging milk on the soles of one’s feet has been found to be effective too. Mix together equal quantities of sesame oil and bottle gourd juice. This mixture should be massaged into the scalp every night. Eating cooked bottle gourd leaves is also known to be useful for this condition. To one mashed banana add a teaspoon of roasted cumin seeds. Mix the two together and have this after dinner daily. This is considered to be an effective remedy for insomnia. You could also try yoga or mediation; they are considered to be highly effective in curing this condition as they help in relaxing the mind.

Remedies for Insomnia-

1.Take 1 tsp honey in 1/2 cup of hot water just before going to bed .

2.Take a warm shower before retiring to bed .

3.Do slow deep breathing for 5-10 minutes at bed time .

4.Sleep on a pointed accupressure  ,magnetic mat for 5-10 minutes .
