Suffering from ear pressure problems when flying or even simply traveling to high altitude locations is a very common and natural occurrence. Changes in air pressure will tend to cause an air pressure difference between the environment and the middle ear – which will lead to discomfort as well as some hearing problems.

One of the best natural methods of relieving sinus pressure and ear pressure is simply to try yawning.

The action of yawning will force the Eustachian tubes to open and thereby allow the pressure from the middle ear to equalize with the air pressure in the environment. Chewing on some gum or sucking on a piece of hard candy is also known to be very effective in relieving ear pressure. You could also hold your nose and blow out gently in order to relieve ear pressure.

However, it is very important that you avoid blowing your nose too hard as it could cause even more damage to the inner ear. Another method of dealing with ear pressure symptoms is to pour a bit of boiling water onto paper towels that have been folded and placed in the bottom of small cups. The cups should then be placed over the ears in order to let the heat from the paper towels force the ears to open themselves up.

How to relieve pressure in ears?

Ear pressure build up is usually experienced when one moves from a high altitude to a lower altitude, or vice versa, at a rapid speed. When pressure in the ears begins to increase, people usually find it difficult to hear clearly, and will tend to experience a thudding sound in the ears. Ear pressure relief normally occurs naturally, when you arrive at a level where the pressure inside the ear canal and the pressure outside the body are balanced.

Airplane ear pressure relief can be attained by yawning, thereby opening up the ear canal and somehow balancing the pressure inside the body to the pressure outside the body. However, not many people experience ear pressure inside an aircraft, because the cabin itself is pressurized to a normal level. When an aircraft is taking off, ear pressure build up can be avoided to a certain extent by plugging the earphones made available at the seat. There are also arrangements made for ear plugs to be made available, for people who experience painful ear pressure build up. Ear pressure needs to be stabilized because of the fact that there have been instances where the sense of hearing has been damaged by ear pressure.

What are the causes of ear pressure?

The ear system is connected to the outside through the ear canal. On the inner side of the membrane, there is a connection to the oral and nasal cavities. This is done to maintain a balance so that the membrane does not get damaged by pressure differences. Some of the causes of ear pressure buildup include blockages in the oral-nasal system or infections in the ear canal or within the oral-nasal system. One of the other causes of ear pressure is the rapid altitude change that leads to a difference between the inner and outer pressure. Ear pressure can be very painful and must thus be eliminated.

For the purpose of releasing ear pressure, one might try and hold one’s breath while swallowing water or saliva. This will serve to ‘pop’ the ears. One may also achieve this by consuming some sort of hard candy sweet which involves salivation and swallowing. Another technique to release ear pressure involves gently massaging the sides of the head while opening and closing one’s jaw. This may dislodge any trapped air and help with the process of pressure release. In case the pressure release appears to be without any cause, one should visit a doctor to check if there is an infection which is troubling the ear canal.

How can ear pressure be treated at home?

Ear pressure treatment is not unknown as ear pressure problems are a very common occurrence. A number of activities such as flying in an airplane or traveling to significantly higher altitude locations will cause this problem. This is due to a huge difference between the atmospheric pressure and the pressure within the middle ear. The Eustachian tube is an important player in this entire sequence as it is primarily responsible for the ventilation of the middle ear space. This is also responsible for the ear pressure to remain normal to the ambient air pressure.

Any of the home remedies for ear pressure would focus on the Eustachian tube function that can be significantly improved with a few simple strategies. For instance, simply yawning is considered to be one of the most effective home remedies for ear pressure. This will allow the balance between the environmental air pressure and the air pressure within the ear to balance themselves out – thereby opening up the ear canal. Chewing on gum is another very effective option because of the constant movement of the throat that it generates. This movement of the throat will then allow the air pressure within the Eustachian tube reach some sort of balance with the atmospheric pressures.
