The enlargement of adenoids and tonsils indicates that there is an inflammation of the upper respiratory tract due to an infection. Adenoids and tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue which play an important role in the body’s immunity. They fight infection by trapping bacteria and viruses that enter through the throat and by producing antibodies.
Adenoids are located in the area where the nasal passages connect to the throat and are not very visible through the mouth, while tonsils are more visible and situated at the back of the throat on both sides. When the adenoids and tonsils get infected due to bacteria, they become enlarged. The enlargement of the tonsils may cause discomfort while breathing or swallowing and enlarged adenoids may cause the nose to get blocked. They return to their regular size once the infection goes away. In children prone to infections that are frequent or chronic, the adenoids and tonsils tend to remain enlarged.
Children with enlarged adenoids and tonsils may suffer from a sore throat and may experience pain while swallowing. When the adenoids enlarge, it may cause the voice to sound nasal and the palate shape may also change. Sometimes enlarged adenoids and tonsils may lead to serious problems such as ear infections that are chronic and also hearing loss. This happens because the eustachian tube gets blocked and fluid accumulates in the middle ear. There could also be frequent sinus infections and nosebleeds. Some children may also experience obstructive sleep apnea, where they may be snoring interspersed within brief periods when they stop breathing during sleep. This causes reduced oxygen levels. Another problem caused by enlarged adenoids and tonsils is weight loss or inability to put on further weight. The pain and discomfort in breathing may not allow the child to eat adequately.
It is not advisable to administer the usual home remedies for infections of the upper respiratory tract as the patient is a toddler, due to the toxicity of the remedies which adults are generally able to tolerate. Honey is the mildest and most effective remedy that is appropriate for toddlers suffering from this condition as it has antimicrobial properties. It is important to make sure that the child keeps the honey in the mouth for a few minutes before swallowing. One teaspoon full of honey mixed with a small pinch of black pepper and a few drops of lemon juice given to the child twice daily may also prove to be effective. Homeopathic treatment is also known to be effective in treating this condition.
