Queries on alcohol consumption Alcohol consumption is considered harmful, when done in excess. Accustomed drinkers fail to keep a track of the levels consumed. Safe drinking is to be considered, wherein two days per week are left without drinking.
Recommended levels are not more than three units per day for men and not more than two units for women. A unit of alcohol is 125 ml glass of wine or 250 ml of average strength beer, 25 ml of spirit or 25 ml of port or sherry. Alcohol tolerance levels are at times, deceiving.
A false reassurance might result in dangerously high intake level. High tolerance levels of the body, fails to arise any kind of signal. A firm decision to cut down on alcohol is difficult. Choosing ways that suit every individual is important. Severe drinking results in depressed reflexes, hypothermia, stupor, blurred vision, coma, hypotension and muscular incoordination. Cancer, cirrhosis, neurological problems, stroke, impotence, mental problems are the outcomes of severe drinking behaviour. Cessation of the blood cells is seen to occur, due to clumping of the red blood cells. This results in plugging up of the smaller blood vessels, thereby resulting in lack of oxygen to the tissues. Increased pressure results in blood vessel breakage in the oesophagus and stomach. Anaemia, decrease in immunity and weakened bone structure are the other side effects.
