Jaundice is a condition that causes a yellowish discoloration of the mucous membranes, white portion of the eyes and the skin, due an increase in the level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is formed as a by-product, when the body naturally breakdowns and destroys red blood cells. When this happens, the hemoglobin molecule released into the blood splits, and the heme portion goes through a chemical conversion forming bilirubin.
Under normal conditions the liver metabolizes and then gets rid of this bilirubin (in the form of bile). At times there may be a disruption in the production of bilirubin and/or normal metabolism, thus resulting in jaundice. Some of the symptoms of this condition are; dark colored urine, yellowish hue to the skin and eyes, light colored stool, nausea, vomiting, fever, weakness, abdominal pain, headache, loss of appetite and itching sensation on the skin.
The condition can however be treated with some simple home remedies. Squeeze half a lime into half a cup of beetroot juice and then drink the mixture. This is considered to be very effective. Radish leaves are also useful for treating this condition. Pound the leaves and then extract the juice through a piece of cloth. The patient should have 500ml of this juice daily. It will help in improving the appetite and will also clean out the bowels. Tomatoes are also very helpful in treating this condition. Consuming a glass of tomato juice with a hint of salt, first thing in the morning, will prove to be beneficial for this condition. Barley water is an equally effective treatment. This can be prepared by adding 1 cup of barley to 3 liters of water. The mixture should then be allowed to simmer for 2-3 hours and then had 3-4 times in a day.
A complete juice diet should be adopted till the symptoms subside. This diet should last for at least a week, after which the individual can progress to a fruit diet for the next 4-5 days. Three meals in a day that comprise of only fresh fruits should be had. Thereafter light carbohydrates can be had. It would be advisable to avoid meats and stick to a complete vegetarian diet for a month or two. Physical rest is very important while dealing with this condition, hence get as much rest as you possibly can, and stay away from any kind of stressful activity. As you are also experiencing pain it would be advisable to consult a physician immediately.
