Natural treatment for swollen ankles
- Elevate your legs while sitting or lying down. Prop up your legs on a stool when you are reading or watching television. Put your foot on a low height stool while you are sitting and working.
Use 3 or 4 pillows to rest your feet to raise your legs above the heart level to reduce the pressure on the backside of thighs, knees and lower back. This will ensure a decrease in swelling. You can also use support socks and stockings, leg wedges or proper fitting shoes for lowering pressure and thus reducing swelling. - Take a light stroll in the nights before retiring for bed and walk short distances in the daytime.
- Avoid standing or sitting in the same position for a long time. Do not sit cross legged as the pressure on the ankles will increase.
- Stretch your calf muscles and body for 2 or 3 minutes in between your work.
- Exercise regularly and do deep breathing exercises.
- Massage your ankles gently in circular motions with any oil 2 to 3 times daily.
- Drink lots of water and increase your intake of other fluids like fruit juices, soups etc. Limit salt consumption.
- If the swelling does not subside after a days please consult your physician.
