The development of swollen and tender veins in the rectum is a condition referred to as hemorrhoids. There are two groups of veins that are responsible for draining blood from the rectum region and anal canal. Hemorrhoids can develop in either of these sets of veins.
Hemorrhoids can occur on the internal veins causing swelling and inflammation. These are not visible, unless they become very severe, in which case they protrude out of the anus. The external veins can also have hemorrhoids which are visible and can also be felt. Strained bowel movements due to constipation are a common cause of hemorrhoids. Pregnancy is also a time during which hemorrhoids commonly develop. This is because the pressure on the veins increases, causing them to swell. Diseases of the liver also lead to swelling of the veins, resulting in hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids usually occur in individuals above the age of fifty years.
The most prominent symptom of hemorrhoids is bleeding from the anus, without any accompanying pain. There is an appearance of fresh red blood in the stools. The blood may also be seen on toilet paper or on the toilet seat caused by dripping from the anus. Prolapsed hemorrhoids are a condition in which the internal hemorrhoids become swollen and extend out of the anus. These may sometimes be pushed back into the anal canal. If they remain out, the swelling can increase. Itching can also develop on hemorrhoids that protrude out. Clotting of blood could take place on the hemorrhoids increasing the inflammation. Bowel movements aggravate the condition of hemorrhoids.
There are some home remedies that can help to provide relief from hemorrhoids. An excellent home remedy is to mix ground black mustard in yogurt. Eat this, ensuring that you chew on the mustard properly. Drink a glass of buttermilk afterwards. This is known to alleviate the symptoms of piles or hemorrhoids. Boiling pomegranate peels in water, and drinking the water daily is also believed to be effective in treating hemorrhoids. Turmeric is beneficial for treating inflammation, and as such can be consumed either in milk or in the diet. Margosa has anti-inflammatory qualities which will help to reduce swelling and pain. Margosa extract may be applied to the external hemorrhoids. The bleeding and tenderness will be alleviated. Witch hazel also helps to reduce bleeding and gives a soothing effect. Aloe vera gel may be applied directly to the anus to relieve the pain and swelling.

Piles can be cured through surgical treatment and only a medical expert or a physician can recommend the next course of action to heal piles. In order to control piles it is important to reverse constipation, which is the main cause of piles. It is unfortunate that piles cannot be cured at home. No form of local treatment either can be used to cure piles.
The patient must work with the doctor in tandem to address the main cause of the condition, which is chronic constipation. One particularly effective home treatment for controlling constipation calls for the adoption of only natural foods in the diet. Primarily, the entire gastrointestinal tract should be administered complete rest for the intestines to be thoroughly cleansed. To begin with, the patient must take on an all-fresh-fruit diet for the first one week. Fresh fruits such as grapes, apples, pears, peaches, oranges, pineapples and melons must be consumed. Freshly prepared unsweetened lemon water made from fresh lemons in plain water can be had throughout the day. In chronic constipation cases, patients are advised to undergo a short fast prior to adopting the all-fruit diet. During the fast, patients can consume freshly squeezed orange juice in a glass of warm water.
An enema with tepid water is also recommended lukewarm daily in the morning during the fast. The fast is effective in cleansing the bowels and giving much needed time to heal the rectal tissues. After the fruit diet has ended, the patient should undergo a diet comprising only natural soft foods aimed at ensuring soft stools. The natural diet must be low in fat and examples of some foods to be consumed at such a time include skimmed milk, buttermilk, unsweetened yoghurt, farmer's cheese made from skimmed milk. Dry fruits, such as figs and raisins can also be part of the diet. Foods to be avoided at such time include cultivated cabbage, onions, beans and peas, cereals, and fruit products. Red meat, fish, eggs, sugary foods, white rice, deep fried foods, refined flour products, caffeinated beverages must also be avoided.
Exercise also plays a very significant role in strengthening the digestive system and certain abdominal exercises are known to be effective in improving the bowel movements, enhancing the circulation of rectal area and relieving accumulation. Some simple forms of exercises that can be useful include walking, jogging, cycling and swimming. These outdoor activities are also useful in improving health and vitality.

Natural cures for piles The best way to take care of hemorrhoids is to ensure that you are passing soft stools. This is basically the only way you can avoid irritating your hemorrhoids and making them worse. Add fibre and fluid to your diet and cut back on carbohydrates. Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, oatmeal, bran, whole wheat and flaxseed. This should help soften your stools considerably.
Avoid white bread, meat and all bakery goods. If you have bleeding hemorrhoids, a good remedial measure is to apply aloe vera gel to your rectum. This will help with the healing. You can also apply a paste of turmeric powder and rose water to help heal wounds. Keep your hemorrhoids dry by using a hair dryer on warm setting. This will help in healing faster.
If you can, eliminate using toilet paper completely for about a week. Use water and wash your genitals with your hands. Pat dry with toilet paper, but make sure you do not rub, as this can irritate your hemorrhoids further. Applying witch hazel locally will also help with the healing process. Try not to sit on hard surfaces. As a matter of fact, lie down and rest as much as you can. This will be of maximum help.
