Home treatment for ingrown hair

I have an ingrown hair on my neck that is turning into a sore/bump. Is there anything I can do to remedy this myself instead of going to a dermatologist?

Home treatment for ingrown hair

Ingrown hair, also referred to as razor bump, is the hair that curls back and grows back into the follicle. They get embedded in the skin and thereby irritate the skin. At times, razor bumps are painful and unsightly.

Frequent shaving increases the risk of ingrown hair. The bumps contain pus and resemble a cyst. A warm and moist compress helps in softening the skin.

Wetting the hair prior to shave helps in avoidance of unwanted strokes in shaving. Ingrown and embedded hair is loosened and removed with the help of a tweezer. A sterile needle is used as an alternative, in the absence of a tweezer. Placing a hot pack for a while helps in loosening the ingrown hair. Shaving in the direction of hair growth proves beneficial. Use of an exfoliating scrub or loofah helps in removal of dead skin and loosens embedded skin. Pore opening helps, as ingrown hair gets stuck. A moisturising soap is helpful in protecting the skin from infection. Removal of ingrown hair is followed by application of an antiseptic, such as benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. This acts as extra protection, thereby preventing infection. Causes and remedies for ingrown hair is available.
