Asthma refers to a chronic case of inflammation in the bronchial tubes. The inflammation causes the bronchial airways to become swollen and narrow, leading to breathing difficulties. This condition can generally be reversed completely or partially.

The tubes become highly sensitive to irritants and allergens. The chronic inflammation causes them to constantly be in state of hyper sensitivity. People differ in their levels of sensitivity to triggers. This determines the medication that needs to be administered. The airways through which we breathe become narrow during an asthma attack, and as such the flow of air up and down the tubes becomes disrupted. The inflammation causes redness and irritation in the bronchial tubes. The tissues that become inflamed start to produce an increased amount of mucus, which begins to block the passages. The cells that become damaged are shed off through the airways, causing further clogging. Bronchospasm refers to the restriction of the muscles which occurs during asthma attacks. When the bronchial tubes become inflamed and restricted, it makes them extremely sensitive to allergens and irritants. The continued exposure to these triggers causes further narrowing in the tubes. Due to all these factors the air needs to be exhaled forcefully and this causes wheezing.

Individuals who suffer from asthma often fall victim to acute bronchitis. The best treatment for preventing repeated attacks of bronchitis is to take the prescribed medication. Vitamins are essential for building immunity against bronchitis. Vitamin A must be taken in substantial doses. This will help to aid the healing of the inflamed mucus linings of the bronchial tubes. Vitamin C also enhances the immune system and contributes to the strengthening of the mucus membranes of the lungs. Vitamin E has antioxidant properties and thus helps to protect the lungs from environmental irritants. Zinc also plays a role in healing the linings of the lungs. All these nutrients must be consumed as part of the daily diet. Lung tissues become further damaged due to increased exposure to smog and other chemicals. Such exposure must be prevented or at least reduced. Milk and dairy products increase the formation of mucus and as such intake must be restricted. Increased consumption of water and other fluids will help to keep the mucus thin and allow it to flow more easily.

Home remedies for preventing bronchitis involve the use of turmeric. Turmeric powder can be added to milk and had a couple of times daily. Ginger can also be taken in the form of tea for building resistance to bronchitis. Onion is known to make the mucus thin and prevent further production. Raw onion juice may also be given to the child every morning.
