Home treatment for heel pain

Heel pain is a cause of excessive body weight and improper sandals. Excessive body weight, especially on the lower abdomen, results in excessive pressure on the knees, which in turn increases the stress on the heels. Avoid wearing high heeled sandals.

Correct sized shoes or sandals are preferred. Excessive walking also results in heel pain, especially for individuals who are not used to walking. Pain in the heel is caused by heel spur or Plantar Fascitis.

Typical symptoms fail to show up. Pain in the heel, especially after rising from the floor is common. Plantar fascia runs from the ball of the feet to the heel bone. It is a tight ligament, which tears away from the heel bone. Calcium is deposited to stick together the detached fibres. Hence, it is also referred to as calcaneal spurs, and are commonly seen to occur, as a result of pressure in the heels. Stretching exercises help in treating heel spur. Specially developed shoes with extra padding absorb shock. Heel cradle or heel cups are available commercially. Standing for long hours increases pain in the heels.
