While pregnancy is the most fulfilling experience a woman has, it has its pitfalls as well. A woman’s body undergoes tremendous changes during pregnancy and she has to deal with various changes in her personal image, vis-à-vis her figure as well as hormonal changes which bring about changes in the way the body functions and also alters the way she reacts emotionally. One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is nausea and vomiting, in other words, morning sickness.

This nausea normally hits women first thing in the morning, but it can also occur at other times of the day depending on various factors such as sensitivity to certain smells, and sudden movements among others. Fortunately most complaints of morning sickness only last during the first trimester and things improve as soon as the fourth month starts. There are very few women who suffer morning sickness throughout their pregnancy.

The main reasons for morning sickness are the hormonal changes the body undergoes during pregnancy, but other factors such as Vitamin B deficiency and a weak gastrointestinal tract can also be responsible for morning sickness.

There are several simple home remedies that help to deal with morning sickness and reduce its severity. Pregnant women should avoid staying on an empty stomach for long periods, so snacking regularly or taking 6 small meals instead of 3 large meals is recommended to stabilize the stomach acids and prevent nausea. It is also recommended to have a meal high in protein content before sleeping at night, to reduce the chances of nausea and vomiting in the morning. You can also take 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar with honey before you sleep to avoid morning sickness. You can put a few drops of essential oils of lavender or peppermint on your pillow or add it to the humidifier in the room so that the air you breathe is gently perfumed. This helps to reduce the feeling of nausea. If you suffer from intense morning sickness, you should avoid sudden movements in the morning and get up gently from the bed giving your body time to stabilize. If possible you should start the day by sipping a cup of ginger tea while you are in bed. This helps to reduce morning sickness. A mixture of 1 tsp limejuice, 1 tsp mint juice and 1 tbsp sugar can be taken thrice a day to counter morning sickness during the first trimester. You should keep a piece of fresh ginger root which has been dipped in rock salt handy in an airtight bottle and you can suck on it whenever you feel a bout a nausea hitting you.
