Hypotrichosis is a condition in which there is an absence of hair growth. Such conditions develop at the time of birth and last throughout the life of the individual. This is not to be confused with alopecia, which is a condition in which there is loss of hair in areas where there was prior hair growth.
Defects during the process of development of the embryo or genetic abnormalities cause hypotrichosis. There are a large number of hypotrichoses that occur due to genetic factors. Most often, those affected with this condition suffer from other problems also, such as mental and physical disturbances. Conditions that involve hypotrichoses are very difficult to treat as there is still no known treatment for them. The understanding of why and how these conditions occur is being studied and the findings are continuously being recorded. There are some types of hypotrichoses that occur most commonly. Congenital aplasia is a developmental condition in which the skin fails to form fully during embryonic development. This could occur in the womb and at birth it is visible as a patch on which hair follicles are absent. This defect usually develops on the back portion of the scalp, in the center of the spiraling pattern of hair growth. In case of small defects, a scab develops, leaving behind scarring.
Another type of hypotrichosis is triangular alopecia, in which a triangular patch of skin lacks hair follicles for reasons that are not known. Treatment involves surgical removal of the area or implantation of new follicles taken from other parts of the scalp. Congenital atrichia is another condition in which the individual experiences complete hair loss in early childhood. This is condition that tends to run in families; however it is seen that sometimes it develops in babies born to parents who do not suffer from this condition.
Hair loss due to genetic factors can be a serious problem for those who suffer from it, since it is permanent and may result in complete baldness. This is a very apparent condition that can cause embarrassment and depression for the one facing it. Medicine today has advanced tremendously and options are available that can allow people suffering from this condition a chance to live a normal life. Hair loss of these types is treated with the help of surgery. Hair restoration surgery is the best option; however it could prove to be quite expensive. Hair plugs are another alternative for those who are unable to afford hair restoration surgery.
