Home Remedies for Poison Ivy and Oak
Read on the following home remedies for poison ivy and oak:
- Consume more of foods rich in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. These food sources such as orange and lemon help in preventing infection and reducing swelling.
- Calcium and Beta-carotene are also effective for curing poison ivy.
These help in boosting the immune system and speed healing. - Eat plenty of foods rich in zinc such as beef, brown rice, lamb, pork, lentils, milk, peas, beans and oysters. These foods help in repairing skin tissues that are damaged by poison ivy.
- Calamine lotion is another effective cure that helps in speed healing of poison ivy.
- Prepare a mixture of water and cornstarch. Ground it to paste and apply over the affected skin area. You can also replace cornstarch with baking soda, Epsom salts or oatmeal.
- You can also try application of aloe vera juice, tofu or watermelon rind on the infected area. These will help in soothing skin and drying poison ivy.
- Calendula lotion helps to reduce itching and restrict the spread of the rash. The use of this lotion also aids in faster recovery.
- Wash your clothes well because when you are suffering from poison ivy, your clothes may come in contact with your skin. If you don't wash them properly, then you are at a higher risk of redeveloping the condition.
