Health advice on vaginal area

A few general practices relating to hygiene and cleanliness are all that are required in order to keep the vagina healthy and clean. The vagina has a self cleansing system, and therefore does not require any special care. In fact, some practices that are often recommended to clean the vagina can actually cause harm by upsetting this system.

For this reason, you should using soap to wash your vagina. Vaginal douching is also not recommended, along with vaginal sprays, all of which upset the pH balance of the vagina, thus making it possible for bacteria and fungi to take hold. You should wash your vagina a couple of times a day with plain water. When you wipe yourself after urinating, do so from the front to the back rather than the other way around, which has the risk of spreading bacteria from the anal area to the vagina. You should also try to keep the vaginal area as dry as possible, because moisture encourages fungi to grow. Avoid using underwear and clothes made of synthetic materials as they not only increase perspiration, but they do not absorb sweat. Finally, you should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Apart from being generally good for the body, this will help flush out bacteria from the urinary tract.
