Natural remedies for avoiding cholesterol

What kind of food should be avoided and what should be taken if cholesterol is high?
(28 Sep 2007)

Since most people today are extremely preoccupied with work and other stressful activities, it is not uncommon for people to get attracted to the advantages of an unhealthy, fast food diet. Let’s be honest, not many of us really have the time to wait for a well cooked meal, when we can get something as filling as a burger in less than 5 minutes of that time. What most of us do not realize is the fact that this habit could possibly have a very negative impact on the quality of your life in the long run.

Only recently have people begun to take more of an effort to understand the effects of an unhealthy diet and the problems it can cause. Cholesterol levels on a person’s blood play a significant role in the amount of effect poor health can have on the quality of your life. Cholesterol is created by the liver from the saturated fat in your diet. Some of the more common types of foods that increase your cholesterol content include meat, eggs and dairy products. If your body has a higher than normal cholesterol content, the extra cholesterol may start to build up in your arteries, Lowering the blood flow through that artery and eventually completely blocking it. When this blockage occurs in an artery that supplies blood to the heart, it can lead to a heart attack, while if the artery that is blocked supplies blood to the brain, the end result could possibly be a stroke. It is advisable for any man above the age of 35 and women above the age of 45 to frequently have their cholesterol levels checked. Normal levels of cholesterol vary between 150 mg or 200 mg per 100 ml of blood. Anything above this range is medically termed to be high cholesterol content and can lead to symptoms of fatigue, excessive sweating or even a feeling of uneasiness.

To counter the effects of high cholesterol and treat the condition, you should try taking 10 pieces of cinnamon sticks and putting them in a pot that contains 5 teacups of water and boil it. Drink this concoction while it is still warm. You could also try adding a piece of garlic to a boiling glass of milk and drink it when it has cooled to room temperature. This will also help significantly ease any cardiac pain that you may experience with high cholesterol levels. Change your diet to include a high intake of foods rich in fiber such as blackberries, raspberries, broccoli and green peas.

Natural remedies for avoiding cholesterol

Hypercholesterolemia, the condition in which a person's cholesterol levels are high, is what is known as a “metabolic derangement” that is a part of another disease or can lead to disease, particularly those affecting the heart. If hypercholesterolemia is detected early, then dietary changes are often sufficient to control and reverse the condition, and to avoid any lasting damage. Note however that drastic changes to the diet are required. On the other hand, if the condition has existed for a long time, the persistent presence of excess cholesterol in the body has usually already done enough damage as to require medication in addition to dietary changes.

Your diet should essentially aim at decreasing intake of fat and cholesterol and increasing intake of fiber and complex carbohydrates. Note that trans fats and simple carbohydrates are considered to be healthy, and you should therefore try to avoid them. Beyond these basic guidelines, you will need to discuss and chalk out a more detailed diet plan with your doctor's help, taking into account your cholesterol levels, lifestyle, and any other health conditions that may exist. For example, high blood pressure often goes along with high cholesterol, and you should therefore try to limit your intake of salt and sodium rich foods in general. Your plan should also include exercise and cutting down on tobacco and alcohol if you use either one regularly.
