Urinary tract infections are the second most common types of infections in the human body and account for almost 8.3 million doctor visits each year in the United States of America alone. Women happen to be more prone to urinary tract infections and almost 40% of all women will experience the onset of the condition at some point in their lives.
About 12% of all men are known to encounter the condition as well. Urinary tract infections can be of varying degrees of seriousness, but can cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort to the individual who experiences this condition. They can originate in almost any part of the urinary tract from the kidneys to the urethra or even the bladder and are known to be of more serious nature depending on how high up the urinary tract they are located. The urinary system consists of the kidneys which are a couple of small organs that lie on either side of the spine and help in the removal of waste substances and excess water from the blood, as well as eliminating them from the body. The bladder is a sac like organ that helps store the urine and, when the urine content reaches a certain level, it initiates an impulse to the brain to urge the body to urinate. The urethra is the last part of the urinary tract and connects the bladder with the outside of the body and also consists of a muscle called the urinary sphincter, located at the junction of the bladder and the urethra that helps in controlling the urge to urinate.
Since urinary tract infections are so common, there are a number of rather effective home remedies that help in the treatment of the condition. For example, you could try adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water to help ease the infection. The soda has a neutralizing effect on the acidity of the urine thereby decreasing the amount of pain the patient will experience. Cranberry juice is known to be extremely beneficial, as it prevents infection causing bacteria from attaching itself to the lining of the bladder. Make it a habit to drink about 4 ounces of cranberry juice everyday to keep your bladder infection free. If currently affected by a urinary tract infection, an intake of about 2 glasses should be extremely helpful. Drink a lot of water and other fluids as they will help considerably in eliminating any toxins from the body that may aggravate the condition.

Home remedies for urinary infection
A urinary tract infection is usually a minor ailment and can be quickly and easily treated using some simple home remedies and precautions. First of all you should drink lots of water to flush out the bacteria from your system. You should also urinate whenever you feel like it. With a urinary tract infection, the frequent urge to urinate can be quite troublesome, but you should avoid holding back. It is also a good idea to wash yourself after you urinate. You should avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugar as well.
Vitamin C is considered a simple, harmless treatment for urinary tract infections. Taking a couple of tablets a day makes your urine acidic, thus making it difficult for bacteria to survive in your bladder. Be sure to take at least one tablet before you go to bed. Cranberry juice is often recommended, and is also effective. Drink at least one glass of cranberry juice a day, without sugar.
Note that in case of a serious infection, medical attention is necessary. If your infection is particularly painful or persistent, if you notice blood in your urine, or if you develop a fever, you should visit your doctor. If you have recurrent infections too, a visit to the doctor is a good idea.
