Sinusitis results when the lining of the nasal sinuses become inflamed. The hollow cavities found behind the nose, within the cheek bones and around the eyes are called sinuses. Sinuses function by warming, moistening and filtering the air in the nasal cavity.
We are also able to vocalize certain sounds due to the sinuses. The sinus cavities can become swollen due to a cold or allergy. Inflammation may also occur when bacteria enters the cavities and affects the swollen lining. Once sinusitis develops, the bacteria and mucus are unable to get flushed out. Sinusitis usually occurs in winter and if it not properly treated can persist for years.
Individuals with sinusitis experience discomfort in the nose, eyes and middle ear; excessive nasal discharge that is thick and green, post-nasal drip that has a bad taste; cough and headache due to congestion. They may also suffer from blocked nose, swelling of the face, toothaches, a feeling of tiredness and maybe even fever. If the sinusitis continues for more than a period of twelve weeks, it is referred to as chronic. In this case, the individual may experience additional symptoms such as reduced sense of taste and smell, and fatigue.
Individuals suffering from sinusitis may experience a great deal of pain and discomfort. Generally, antibiotics are prescribed for treating sinusitis but there are also natural remedies that can be quite effective in dealing with this condition. It is very important to drink lots of water and other clear liquids, as keeping the body hydrated may help to make the mucus thinner. It is believed that dairy products such as milk and cheese lead to the formation of more mucus; as such it is best to stay away from these foods if you are suffering from sinusitis. Colds tend to increase the vulnerability to sinusitis. It is advisable to treat a cold immediately with the help of zinc supplements and adequate rest. Food items that are high in antioxidants such as broccoli, tomatoes, berries, garlic and spinach help to boost the body’s immunity and may help to prevent infections of the sinuses. The burning sensation and discomfort you are experiencing is due to the thickening mucus and bacteria that is trapped in the cavities. The best way to treat this is to rinse with saltwater twice daily. Allow the solution to enter one nostril and flow out of the other. This method of draining or flushing brings relief. You may also try the inhalation method. A few drops of eucalyptus, tea tree or thyme oil can be added to water and heated. Inhale the steam from this by draping a towel around the head for 15 minutes. This is very helpful in soothing the inflammation and alleviating congestion. Applying warm and moist heat to the affected area of the nose, eyes and cheekbones with the help of a washcloth also helps to take away the pain.

I hear that if you put organic Xylitol crystals (it's like sugar) and add clean water to make a nasal wash, it has the antibacterial power to stop the infection and even stop some pneumonias (as a spray). That's what I 'hear'. Organic E oil (like Jason) should soothe the pain otherwise.
