Treatment for tongue swelling

A swollen tongue is usually a symptom of another problem, rather than the problem itself. Swelling of the tongue is noticed generally conditions related to the tongue, any infections related to the tongue or allergic reactions to food or even toothpastes, mouthwash or cosmetic products used on the lips which could have come in contact with the tongue. In addition it is also a symptom of hypothyroidism, over-secretion of the pituitary gland and other conditions such as acromegaly(unnatural enlargement of lips) and even certain tumors.

In any of these cases it is best advised to consult a doctor for accurate diagnosis of the problem so that the correct measures may be taken to either avoid the irritant or take adequate medication to rectify the problem.

More often than not, tongue swelling is due to anemia which can be cured by increasing your intake of cereals which iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid. You should also supplement this by consuming more eggs, cheese, fish, beef and chicken. Vegetarians will find that beets and spinach are rich sources of iron and folic acid, but cook them so that they don't lose their nutrient value. The best way is to cook them in the microwave oven without too many condiments and spices.
