(26 Sep 2007)

Obesity is one of the most common and widespread conditions today. While people were aware of the fact that an unhealthy diet could lead to obesity, not many seemed to bother. However, over the last few years, individuals from all over the world have started to realize how much this condition can not only interfere with your daily schedule, but also affect the all round quality of your life.

Being over weight or obese can be defined as excessive fat accumulation in the body – to a point where it poses a credible risk to an individuals health. One of the standards in identifying if a person is obese is to use the Body Mass Index (or BMI) where the weight of an individual (in kilograms) is divided by the square of his or her height (in meters). Any result above the amount of 25 will put the individual in an overweight or obese category. Obesity can lead to a number of other medical complications such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic problems.

The most prominent reason for the fact that the condition is so common is that people consume much more food during the course of the day than they used to. Moreover, today’s hectic lifestyle of most people pushes them to eat food that is rather unhealthy either by being extremely oily, or having minimal or absolutely no nutritional content. Other factors that may be the primary cause of the condition include genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, thyroid or pituitary disorders or low basal metabolism. Cabbage is well regarded in the process of slimming down and a high intake of the vegetable is strongly recommended. You must also make it a point to eat around 12 fully grown curry leaves every morning for a period of six months to contribute to your weight loss effort. Boiling some ginger in a pot and adding a few slices of lemon before drinking it while it is still hot will help you control your appetite, thereby playing an important role in your weight loss regime.  The most effective way to lose weight is a combination of eating the right kind of food and getting a lot of exercise to help burn up the excess fat that has already accumulated in the body. Sit ups and push ups will increase the flexibility of your body and tone the abdominal muscles, buttocks, thighs and other body parts where fat will usually accumulate. With regards to diet, avoid any oily, fatty foods and fast food.
