What do you do for a infant with colic?

Colic is the condition where a seemingly healthy baby frequently cries or screams for extended periods of time without any comprehensible reason. Not many people are aware of the fact that this is a condition, as most assume that this is the way babies generally act. It is only after they visit their pediatrician that they are informed and made aware of this syndrome.
To define it better, a baby is said to suffer from colic when they cry or scream for periods longer than 3 hours everyday and about 3 times a week. The condition is rather common and is known to affect up to 20 percent of all newborns and can be a very frustrating experience for the parents, especially if this is their first child. The condition normally manifests within the first three weeks of the babies life and will, under normal circumstances, disappear before the baby turns four months old. Studies have shown that although all babies have the ability to turn ‘colicky’, bottle fed babies are usually at a higher risk than breast fed ones. Pediatricians will normally consider a baby colicky only after other tests have been performed to make sure that there are no other medical complications with the child that are a root cause of the crying or screaming. No real or substantiated causes of the condition are known, but many research experts believe that it originates in the child’s intestines. Some other scholars believe that environmental conditions are to blame, while recent studies have also shown that the avoidance of cow’s milk in the child’s diet significantly lowers the likelihood of the child suffering from this condition.
Here are a few tips that could help significantly in coping with the onset of colic. Try mixing one teaspoon of mint juice mixed with a small amount of powdered black pepper and honey and fennel. This is extremely helpful in treating any intestinal problems and is one of the most widely used home remedies for the treatment of colic. Certain foods have a tendency of making a child more colic and should be avoided. These food items include cauliflower, broccoli, green peppers, onions, eggs, radishes and beans. It is a normal human urge to want to pick up a baby every time he or she cries, but one must also remember that infants will often cry because of being tired or fatigued. In this event, picking up the child will only stimulate him or her further.

Natural remedies for colic
An infant with colic usually cries for long periods of time. Usually it is the crying which alerts parents and doctors to the fact that the child is suffering from colic. Children usually appear to be in pain but other than passing wind, show no other symptoms. Several infants suffer from this and doctors have noticed that despite this they tend to be normal in terms of their intake and growth. So there is no need to worry. However you should also keep in mind the fact that all crying sessions cannot automatically be attributed to colic. It is better to seek a confirmation from the doctor.
You can first try to make your child comfortable. Try giving your baby a warm water bath since this might soothe him. You can also try carrying your baby since the child may enjoy the comfort your presence brings it. Keep your child happy and distract it by taking it for a walk in a sling or talking or singing to it. Some babies are unable to digest lactose, a kind of proteins. This could cause them discomfort. You should ask your doctor for the best remedy to adopt. Add a spoonful of anise, fennel or cumin to some water. Boil, then cool before giving your baby a spoonful.
