Suffering from a tooth ache can be one of the most painful and seemingly unbearable experiences of a person’s life. The pain caused by a toothache can also be caused by jaw problems and may even possibly be a symptom of a severe underlying medical condition. Heart problems such as angina are known to show symptoms of jaw and toothache.
Some of the more conventional causes of toothaches, however, are a cracked tooth, exposed tooth roots, disease of the jaw joints and gum disease. It is normal to find that your recently filled tooth remaining significantly sensitive for a prolonged period of time after the filling. This could be a result of the decay spreading too close to the pulp as the dentine near the pulp chamber is extremely sensitive. A certain amount of time is required for a protective layer of dentine to be laid down after a filling so as to provide substantial insulation against temperature changes and a reduction in sensitivity. Most toothaches are known to be aggravated by physical exertion of the teeth or gums. Most cases may require the help of an x-ray or some other medical tests, to correctly identify the root cause of the condition.
Due to the widespread effect of toothaches and the amount of anguish they cause all over the world, there are a number of rather successful home remedies that would help significantly reduce the amount of pain you feel. Dry peppermint leaves are known to be especially effective when dealing with toothaches and simply placing a small stack of dried leaves around the aching tooth for a period of about 15 minutes before spitting it out should work wonders. For best results, make this a regular practice throughout the course of the day. You could also try putting some real vanilla extract on a cotton ball and apply it on the swollen area to help numb it and significantly ease the pain. Cucumber, when cut into thick slices and placed over the affected tooth will provide a soothing effect and is even more effective when chilled. The use of cloves in treating toothaches is legendary and has been practiced almost all over the world to reduce the amount of pain experienced by the individual. If you are an adult, a swig of whiskey may turn out to be surprisingly effective as the gums absorb the alcohol and provides an anesthetic to the affected area.
