Treatment for Waardenburg condition (WS) The Waardenburg condition (WS) is a genetic disorder and is usually passed down from parent to child. The main characteristics of the syndrome include loss of hearing at varying degrees and abnormalities observed in skin and in the pigmentation of hair.
The most commonly viewed characteristic of patients with the Waardenburg syndrome is that they have two differently colored eyes. In most cases, WS patients have one eye that is colored blue while the other is colored brown. In some cases it has been observed that a single eye can contain two different colors. Other distinguishing characteristics include contrasting hair color - like an area of white hair amidst the normal hair or premature graying of hair a very young age, an obvious space in between the broad nasal root, connecting eyebrows, moderate to severe loss of hearing etc.
The characteristics displayed by those suffering from the Waardenburg syndrome are not life threatening. And hence, there is no treatment available to cure the defect as the disorder stems from the individual's genes. However surgery may be used on those with hearing loss or eye issues. As for diet or activity, patients are not required to undergo any restrictions and a majority of them lead a normal life.
