To control sugar craving, it is important to understand why your body demands sugary comfort foods. Usually these food cravings are not eating disorders, but signs of hormonal imbalance especially of serotonin and insulin. These imbalances are caused by a lack of healthy nutrition.

Serotonin is our feel-good hormone. Due to hormonal imbalance or poor digestion, serotonin levels can decrease, and hence cause a feeling of sadness or depression. Sugars and simple carbohydrates provide a short burst of serotonin that makes us feel good for a moment, but the body soon returns to the low-serotonin condition.

On the other hand, insulin is responsible for maintaining blood sugar levels. But if our body is insulin-resistant, our cells are not able to absorb the glucose they need; therefore they signal the brain that we need more carbohydrates or sugars. This results in constant carving for food.

Other reasons for food cravings are fatigue, stress, or sleep deprivation. To complete eradicate the root cause for your sugar cravings, consult a doctor, and depending on an accurate diagnosis, follow these simple steps at home:
  • Eat a balanced diet and eat at regular intervals throughout the day.
  • Reduce your salt intake.
  • Find healthy substitutes like fruits, honey, or yogurt to satisfy your sugar craving.
  • Reduce the temptation from your refrigerator. Make a conscious effort to not to buy sweets when you are out for leisure activities such as shopping.
