Acne is a very common condition that plagues millions of people. It is caused when the pores on the skin are blocked, not allowing the natural oil secreted by the sebaceous glands to escape. White heads, black heads, pimples, inflamed lesions, pustules, papules, cysts and deep pitted scars are all forms of acne.
Dead skin cells and cosmetics are the main causes of clogged pores. Overactive sebaceous glands, hormonal imbalances, unhealthy eating habits, pollution and stress aggravate acne. Acne could also be a heredity problem.
Keeping the skin free of excess oil is the first step in treating acne. Avoid using oil based cosmetics and skincare products as they magnify the problem. Products especially designed for oily skin are recommended. Washing your face several times a day with cold water is highly effective in reducing acne as it washes off the accumulated oil and dead skin cells which clog the pores. Using a mild antibacterial soap or face wash is advisable. Lemon juice is a natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antifungal agent rich in vitamin C. Applying lemon juice diluted in water to the affected area will reduce the inflammation and infection. It also prevents scarring and is a natural bleaching agent. Adding a few drops of rose water to lemon juice will restrict the spread of the infection and leaves the skin looking and feeling fresh too. Aloe gel is a natural moisturizer, and is suitable as a moisturizer for acne prone skin as it is non-oily and has a soothing effect on the skin. It is also known to be an effective antifungal agent that kills bacteria and helps in the rejuvenation of skin.
Yogurt can be ingested or applied like a face mask to reduce the occurrence of acne and improve the overall skin texture. Due to its acidic, antibacterial and antibiotic properties, it destroys the bacteria responsible for acne and restricts their further growth. It helps to heal the skin, giving it a healthy appearance. Yogurt also strengthens the immune system, making it strong enough to fight bacterial infections. Increasing your intake of fluids, especially water, will flush out the impurities from the blood and keep the skin supple and hydrated. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices will boost the immune system, reducing the instances of bacterial infections. Junk food should be avoided as it increases the oil buildup leading to acne. Keeping the skin shielded from pollution and the harmful rays of the sun will also prove beneficial.
