On 10th October my total bilirubin was 7 and today on 02 November it is 1.5. There is lot of itching in particular on both legs. Please advice future course of action?

Itching, called pruritus in medical terminology is often one of the chief symptoms of jaundice. Elevated amounts of bilirubin are the prime cause of the itching in the body. It is generally observed that patients with high bilirubin levels in the blood complain of severe itching on the legs: sometimes, between the legs as well. The total bilirubin normal range is 0.3–1.0 mg/dL, which increases to even more than 10 in the case of jaundice. Since your total bilirubin count is quite near the normal range, it indicates that you are in the recovery stage, but there is still excess bilirubin in your body. When your bilirubin level lowers more, you’ll notice that the itching will also subside. However, there are certain points which you need to follow.

Skin lubricants are helpful to ease out severe itching on legs and other body parts. Here are the following things you can do to relax your skin:
  • Treat the affected areas or body parts with calamine lotion or a lotion with menthol and camphor immediately after bath and before going to bed.
  • Look for a lotion having oatmeal as an active ingredient.
  • Soak the affected areas in Epsom salt–cold water solution.
  • Do not scratch the legs heavily, as this sometimes causes hyperpigmentation.
  • Excessive bathing, over-usage of soap, and clothing can also trigger itching (e.g., nylon) and should be avoided.
  • Do not use perfumes till severe itching on the legs subsides.
  • If possible, use a humidifier for keeping the indoor air moist.
  • Relaxed-fit undergarments will help in easing out itching between the legs.
Keep your nails trimmed to avoid infection as well as over-scratching the affected areas. Also it is important to keep a tab on your bilirubin count further. If it is well within the total bilirubin normal range and still the itching does not subside, it is best to contact a dermatologist.
