Since your wife has been suffering from the backache for a year, it means she has chronic backache. It would be best if you consulted an orthopedic surgeon to find out the exact cause of the ache. Backaches can be caused by degenerative conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis, by simple back strain, ligament strain, and by severe injuries such as a slipped disc, or a muscle tear.

The older an injury or strain gets the more difficult it becomes to cure it. So it would be better if you got the problem treated as early as possible. Also, people who are physically overactive as well as those who lead a sedentary lifestyle are at a risk of suffering from backaches. So, if your wife doesn’t get enough exercise, she should start right now. However, it would be better to engage a professional physical trainer since she already has a problem with her back. The wrong kind of exercise can worsen the problem, and if your wife indulges in physically strenuous work too, she should take it easy for a while. On the other hand, if her work includes sitting in one place for long hours, taking a break every one hour and going for a 5 minute walk would help her. Physical stress and mental stress can also cause spasms in some cases, so she also needs to be as mentally relaxed as she can. Till her back is better, it would be better if she didn’t wear high heels and made sure that her posture is straight.

There are many remedies that will help her get relief from the back pain. Taking a warm bath eases the tension in the muscles and treats mild aches in the body. Add three cups of Epsom salt in a bath tub of warm water and have your wife soak in it everyday for 20 minutes. This will not only de-stress her but also ease the pain. Rubbing garlic oil into the back regularly will also bring relief. The oil can be prepared by frying 10 cloves of garlic in 60 ml of coconut, mustard, or sesame oil. Let it fry on a low flame till the cloves turn brown. Let the oil cool, and then rub it well into the back. Let it stay for about four hours, and ask her to take a warm bath after that. Alternatively, she can chew on two to three cloves of garlic everyday. Consuming Vitamin C is also beneficial in treating backaches. For this, she can take the juice of one lemon mixed with common salt twice a day.  Gently massaging the back with peppermint oil would also help.

Natural cure for back pain
  • Eating 2 cloves of garlic in the morning on an empty stomach is good for the ache. Garlic is good not only for backache but also for many other ailments and strengthens the immunity system.
  • Include vegetables, fruits and hot items in her diet.
  • Boil 10 to 15 leaves of Holy basil and boil it in 2 cups of water. When it is reduced to 1 cup, add salt to it and give her to drink it as hot as she can manage. This should be done for at least two times a day.
  • Get a massage done to her back with warm mustard oil or eucalyptus oil before going to bed at night.
  • In 1 teaspoon of honey, mix half a gram of cinnamon powder and give it to her twice a day.
  • If your wife also gets inflammation in her back from time to time, massage ice in the area and after it subsides, you can switch it with hot water bag.
  • Ask her not be in one position for a long time, bend to pick up things or sit in a sliding position.
  • She can prop on pillows to sit up when the pain aggravates.
  • She should try and sleep straight on her back on a firm mattress.
