Fever blisters are also called as cold sores. They are small sores that appear on the outside of the mouth, on the lips, cheeks, chin and nostrils and sometimes inside the mouth, on the gums and on the roof of the mouth. Fever blisters are caused due to a contagious virus called herpes simplex.

There are two types of this virus, type I virus infects the oral tissue and type II virus infects the genital tissue. Fever blisters are caused by type I virus. Fever blisters are contagious and the virus can spread through kissing.

Children can develop fever blisters from their parents, siblings, relatives or friends.

Natural cure for fever blisters are:
  • Apply ice on the sores for ten minutes every hour. This will bring down the fever blisters.
  • Apply lemon balm, tea tree oil on the blisters which will reduce the burning, itching or tingling sensation of the blisters.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the sores. Avoid sharing your cups, towels or clothes. Avoid sex with someone suffering from genital herpes or kissing someone having cold sores.
  • Apply common salt on to the sores for 30 seconds twice a day for 2 to 3 days.
  • Prepare tea by adding 2 to 3 herbal sage leaves and small piece of ginger root or ginger powder to water. Allow it to boil and steep. Have a cup of this tea 2 to 3 times a day.
