How to cure darkness around eyes?
(21 Sep 2007)

Dark circles are one of the most common skin complaints and is characterized by darkened patches of skin just beneath the eyes in the shape of semi-circles. The skin in this area is very delicate and sensitive, and as such is very prone to any kind of damage. Genetics plays a determining role in under eye dark circles.

Hereditary determines the transparency of the skin, and some people are more likely to have very transparent skin under the eyes. This allows for the blood vessels beneath the skin to become more visible giving a darkened hue to the skin. Ageing also makes the dark circles appear more prominent. As individual ages, the skin starts to lose its elastic quality. The body also starts producing decreased amounts of collagen, thereby reducing the softness of the skin. The skin starts to become less supple.

Other factors too can trigger the development of dark circles under the eyes. Sun exposure causes the body to produce an excess of melanin which results in darkening of the skin. The skin around eyes being very sensitive is likely to get most affected. Poor nutrition also makes the skin appear pale, and the dark circles become more visible. Lack of adequate sleep, fatigue and stress can also have an effect on the skin making it pale and dull. As such the darkness around the eye area becomes more apparent. Allergies and skin conditions such as dermatitis can also have this effect.

The most common cause of under eye dark circles is lack of sleep, and as such it is important that you get a minimum of eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep should be undisturbed and must follow a proper routine. Once the body starts getting adequate sleep, the dark circles will start disappearing on their own. Proper diet and moderate exercise is also essential for a healthy body. The more nourished and healthy your body is, the better the condition of the skin. To lighten the under eye area, there are a few home remedies that you can use. A paste of turmeric powder and tomato juice works well to get rid of the darkened patches. Potato and cucumber serve to lighten the skin and can be used to effectively remove dark circles. Extract the juice of equal amounts of cucumber and potato and apply to the under eye area with the help of a cotton swab. Almond oil massaged into the skin daily will help to remove dark circles. Rose water is also very good for treating pigmentation of the skin and can be used to treat dark circles as well.
