HEALTH ADVICE ON PSORIASIS

PSORIASIS WHAT CAN I USE ON IT
(25 Sep 2007)

Psoriasis is a skin condition in which the skin cells start reproducing very quickly causing the skin to become thick, dry and red. The accumulation of skin cells causes flaking and scaling. This condition generally develops on the areas of the scalp, knees and elbows.

Psoriasis can range from mild, in which very small areas of dry skin develop; to severe, in which the entire body becomes covered with scaly and thick skin. This skin condition is a chronic illness which cannot be cured. It may get better or worse, and individuals with psoriasis may sometimes go for years without clear skin. For some, the condition becomes worse in winter, and improves in the warm summer months. Sun exposure is also known to better the condition.

The cause of psoriasis is not known and it could result from factors such as hereditary or environmental triggers. The body’s immune system is also believed to be a determining factor. However the exact cause is yet undiscovered. Psoriasis is also not a contagious disease and direct contact will not lead to the spread of it.

There are various home remedies that can keep psoriasis in check. Boil some almond powder in water and apply the solution on the affected areas. Leave this on overnight and wash it off the next morning. Sandalwood can also be used in treating psoriasis. Add about three teaspoons of sandalwood powder to 3 cups of water. Boil this until it reduces to one third of the quantity. Then add some sugar and a few drops of rose water and drink this couple of times a day. Boiled soap nut can also be applied to the affected skin. You can also gently rub a banana leaf on the skin. This will bring relief from the itching and tenderness. Lime juice is very helpful in treating skin infections and will alleviate the symptoms with regular application. Cabbage soup taken daily is beneficial in treating psoriasis. Another healthy drink for psoriasis is butter milk, as this aids digestion and flushes away the toxins from the body. Vitamin E is a nutrient that is very essential for healthy skin. Consume foods that are rich in vitamin E such as almond oil, spinach, sunflower seeds, sweet potato and wheat germ. Drinking a cup of bitter gourd juice in the morning on an empty stomach is known to be helpful in treating psoriasis. Eating a couple of garlic cloves every day strengthens the immune system and increases protection against psoriasis.
