It is indeed possible to have children even at 38 years. In fact, more and more women today are getting pregnant after the age of 35. Most women in this age group have healthy pregnancies and successful deliveries.
Recent studies have also shown that healthy women aged 35 years and above face a low risk of problems during pregnancy. This is because your overall health plays an important role in your fertility and your chances of having a successful pregnancy. There are some things that you can do to enhance your chances of getting pregnant at this age;
- Firstly, go for a pre-conception examination. It is advisable for your husband to undergo a check-up as well. The both of you can also undergo fertility testing. This will tell you that you are physically prepared to get pregnant.
- Make sure that your diet is healthy and nutritious. Restrict intake of alcohol, caffeine and drugs. If you are currently taking any medications, discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor will also prescribe folic acid supplements which will help to prevent neural tube defects in your baby.
- Engage in moderate exercise. Talk to your doctor about the best program of physical activity for you. However avoid any vigorous exercise once you get pregnant. Walking is one of the best methods of exercise during pregnancy.
Keep in mind that although it is possible to conceive after 35 years, there are certain risks that you would be exposed to. Female fertility declines in the late 20s and reduces even more at 35 years. There is also an increased risk of having a miscarriage after 35 years and fertility treatments may also not be as successful. But with proper care and consultation with your doctor, you can minimize these risks and go on to have a healthy pregnancy.
