Inflammation of the gums is also known as gingivitis and can occur due to various reasons. The main cause of gum inflammation is the buildup of plaque, the sticky substance composed of food debris, mucus and bacteria. Plaque can harden over time and turn into tartar which collects at the base of the teeth.
This can cause the gums to become inflamed, tender and swollen. Poor dental hygiene, hormonal imbalances, overall ill health and uncontrolled diabetes may increase the risk of developing gingivitis.
There are many home remedies which help to relieve the symptoms of gingivitis. However if the condition is severe, it is best to see a doctor. Some common natural treatments for inflamed gums include;
- Combine one teaspoon each of honey and Indian gooseberry powder and add to a cup of water. Drink this daily for about three months.
- Salt water is one of the best remedies for inflamed gums. Add some salt to water and gargle several times a day. This will draw out the infection and also relieve swelling and pain.
- Apply ice to the inflamed and tender areas at frequent intervals during the day.
- Try to consume plenty of food containing vitamin C and calcium. Such foods include green vegetables, Indian gooseberry and milk.
- Apply aloe vera gel to the affected areas to alleviate redness and irritation.
- Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the gums after brushing your teeth. This will help to restrict the growth and spread of bacteria.
- Clove oil is antiseptic in nature and helps to treat inflammation in the gums. Gently rub a small amount of clove oil on the gums.
- Tea tree oil is highly beneficial in treating infections and can be applied to sore and inflamed gums.
