The larynx has two pairs of vocal cords, the false and the true vocal cords. When the true vocal cords vibrate due to passage of air from the lungs, sound is produced. Irritation of the true vocal cords due to excessive coughing can lead to swelling of the cords.
This enlargement or swelling is known as a vocal nodule. A vocal nodule can lead to symptoms such as pain, hoarseness, disturbance in the range of voice and pain in the neck and ears.
Prior to treatment of vocal nodules, it is important to know the cause of the condition. Misuse or abuse of the voice due to excessive shouting or coughing can be treated through some simple home remedies.
- Voice therapy is one of the best treatments for vocal nodules. The aim of the treatment is to make the individual aware of the factors and circumstances that lead to the problem. It also helps the individual find strategies that will reduce strain on the vocal cords. This helps to soften the nodules and make them more flexible.
- Adequate rest encourages shrinking of the vocal cords.
- A good intake of water helps to soothe the irritated vocal cords. Drink warm or room temperature water throughout the day.
- Avoid exposing the vocal cords to irritants such as smoke and dust.
- Certain yoga exercises help in relieving the problem of vocal nodules. One such exercise involves inhaling slowly through the nose, holding for a few seconds and then exhaling slowly. Ensure that inhalation takes place through the nose and not the mouth.
- Another beneficial breathing exercise is alternate nostril breathing in which one must breathe through a single nostril while closing the other one with the fingers. This helps to alleviate any problem of the throat. These exercises should be done for about an hour every day before meals.
